Biog:

Gabriela Tropia is a lecturer and dance filmmaker. Her practice intersects film, performance, and choreography.

She directed Under the Cobblestones, a 20-minute film about freedom of speech and protest, in collaboration with choreographers Igor & Moreno and musician Bellatrix. The film was screened at the Cinedans Festival Amsterdam and was awarded at the Passion for Freedom Arts Festival London.

Gabi’s other screendance works have been showcased in festivals in Brazil, Argentina, France, Spain, Portugal, the US, and Singapore. She directed the short film Units of Action, which has toured in more than 20 countries and is featured in the Videodance Mercosur Circuit Compilation.

Tableleg, a film she directed and performed in at the age of 19, has been shown at Live Screen at Sadler's Wells Theatre.

Gabi has been commissioned twice by the National Museum of Singapore and T.H.E Dance Company, with whom she collaborated to develop the video projection for two live pieces and the short dance film Old House.

For her Jam Series practice-as-research project, she shot and edited dance films within a strict timeframe of 2 hours. This resulted in 13 short films, a Pecha-Kucha symposium presentation, and has been integrated into her teaching practice.

Gabi has published articles in the books Terpsichore in Zeros and Ones (ed. Szperling) and Art in Motion (ed. Hayes and Boulègue).

Currently, Gabi is the Course Leader for the MA Performance: Screen at Central Saint Martins – University of the Arts London. Previously, she worked at the London Contemporary Dance School – The Place. There she envisioned, designed, and led the MA Screendance program for 4 years, the world's only Master's program focusing on dance filmmaking.

She is dedicated to nurturing a new generation of artists.
